• CVS Pharmacies will be closed, but all CVS stores will be open on Christmas Day for last-minute shoppers to pick up anything from milk to Zhu Zhu hamsters. Expect to see sales on impulse food items like chips, nuts, soda, and beer that day.

• Starbucks — Most of the 40-plus stores in San Antonio will be closed for the holiday, but typically a handful of locations in centralized areas stay open for limited hours. Specific store locations will be posted later, so check back!

• UPDATE: Many drive-through Starbucks in and around San Antonio will be open, with hours ranging anywhere from 7am to 10pm. A comprehensive list is being compiled over here.

• Walgreens — Historically, Walgreens closes its “neighborhood” locations on Christmas, but keeps the 24-hour stores near highways or major metropolitan areas open. The drugstore chain is being extra-secretive about their plans this year, only promising that most locations will be open through midnight on December 23rd. We’ll keep you posted!

• UPDATE: Walgreens announced today that most stores will be open on Christmas Day from 9am to 6pm, with pharmacies open in 24-hour stores.

• Walmart — Walmart stores in San Antonio will be closing at 6PM on Christmas Eve, and many locations are actually remaining closed on Christmas Day.

Shopping malls

While almost every mall in Toronto and the GTA, with the exception of Pacific Mall in Markham, is closed on Christmas Day, you can still do your last-minute shopping Dec. 24 at Toronto Eaton Centre, Fairview Mall, Square One, and Vaughan Mills.

Grocery stores

If you need to pick up some last minute Christmas hors d’oeuvres, most grocery stores have got you covered. Loblaws, Dominion, Sobeys, No Frills, Food Basics – they’re all open on Christmas Eve, as long as you get to them before 6 p.m. Alas, none are open on Christmas Day, so buy your turkey early.

LCBO and the Beer Store?

Christmas Eve is a go – but get there before 6 p.m – and, unsurprisingly, Christmas day is a no.

So, is anything open Christmas day?

If you take the bus or the subway and are hoping to visit family or friends on Christmas day, TTC is operating, with Sunday service hours. And you might not be able to shop your heart out Christmas day, but you can still stay entertained. Movie theatres are staying open Christmas Day, as well as several Toronto restaurants. Winn Dixie Grocery Store will be open on Christmas day.

Joshua Whitten with Winn-Dixie says they see an opportunity to pick up some sales. “It does allow us to pick up some extra sales.

As I am sure you are aware that we do have costumers that will forget the last minute item and it does give them the opportunity to come in and shop their neighborhood Winn-Dixie and pick up the item they need,” Whitten said.

He said it also gives their employees a chance to work.

“Keeping our stores open so that our associates can continue working if they like. This is a voluntary program for us,” Whitten said.

Winn-Dixie stores will be open from 8 a.m to 3 p.m. on Christmas day.
It’s fairly safe to assume that the larger grocery store chains, like Safeway and Ralph’s, will be open at least until early afternoon. As will drug stores like Walgreens, CVS and Rite-Aid, and most liquor stores.

And as always, Chinese restaurants are open Christmas Day. I’ve eaten at a Chinese restaurant on New Year’s Eve before, but never on Christmas; it seems to be a pretty popular thing though.

I’ve been working very hard to find my readers some very good bargains online so take advantage of this offer while supplies last.

Even before your meal is done digesting n your stomach you can visit a dozen or so stores open on Christmas in your area.
 
I just found out today that K-mart will only be open from 7 a-m to 9 p-m in selected cities. Contact your local K-Mart store for more details.  CVS reps told me that they plan on having special sale items available all day until 3pm in certain locations.

Target has not finalized plans to open on Christmas Day so check back with this site for more details.  And Hollywood Video said their movie rental stores will be open until 12 noon on Christmas Day.

One local Walgreens filled 400 prescriptions last Christmas.

One of our readers, Marcus Jones, is a last-minute shopper and plans to take advantage of these special holiday store hours.  “Last year I was able to pick up a few good bargains by shopping at stores open on Christmas.  I’ve decided I would try it again this year.”

Don’t forget about Airport Gift Shops. Just in case you forgot to purchase a certain gift this year, most retail stores at your local major airport will be open.

Experts suggest that last minute shopping can pay off with some great discounts but typically some of those must have items will be long gone.
